#BookReview – Shadow Man by Alan Drew @CorvusBooks

It has been a few weeks since I last posted, but I have been busy reading and planning some reviews for publications that are out in 2018!

However, I have managed to sneak in a little read of a chilling crime novel which is out at the beginning of January named ‘Shadow Man’, so here is a little review for you!

It is the late 1980s and Detective Ben Wade has returned to his hometown in Southern California for a quieter life.  This peaceful community is soon turned upside down as they find themselves at the mercy of a serial killer who slips through people’s windows and doors at night, shattering their illusion that this is a safe town.

Detective Ben Wade is an astounding character, an excellent police officer and the relationship he has with his daughter is wonderfully inspiring.  It is just a shame that he still pines for his ex-wife, and that he never had his happy ever after with her.  However, could a relationship with Forensic Specialist, Natasha Betencourt, be on the cards??!

Ben and Natasha struggle to stay one step ahead of the killer.  They are dealing with a secret in the town as well as a murderer, and Ben’s past soon catches up with him.  His own issues that have long since been buried will rock his world once more, and both Ben and Natasha need to decide how far they are willing to go to catch a killer and also reveal a dark secret nestled in their hometown.

There are some upsetting scenes which Alan Drew deals with sensitively.  I won’t go into too much detail as I don’t like to spoil, but the sub-plot is a sensitive one, but one that is often spoken in the news today as it isn’t uncommon.  This, as a result, shows Ben Wade’s weaknesses and hidden issues, which builds on his character even more… and he is certainly a character I desperately hope that I can read more of from in the future.

Alan Drew writes in such a way that makes you hold your breath, he pulls you in and only lets go at that final page.  This is a dark novel full of suspense.  It is a story of a man who would do anything to protect his family and community when confronted with something as terrifying as this.  This is what scary dreams are made of.

Thank you to Corvus Book for providing me with an advanced copy in return for my honest opinion.  This is crime at its finest.

Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas and New Year!
